Because of the fear factor a limited number of places are available.
First come, first scared.

This project is based in Brooke Park (Rosemount) Youth Centre next Monday and Tuesday. There are places for up to 100 young people living around the Brooke Park area of Derry. This is partnership project between the friends of Brooke Park, The Gasyard Feile and Art-Works and funded by the WELB Youth Service.

The workshops will take place in the lead up to the Halloween (Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st October) and have the Banks of the Foyle Festival (The Halloween Festival) as the focal point. The Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival is 20 years old this year. The event has become the biggest open air Halloween Festival in Ireland with up to 20,000 revellers celebrating on the streets of the City. This event is usually held during the mid term break for schools and there is a palpable air of excitement for children as the day draws near. But for parents there are also many concerns on the night. Street drinking and random violence have placed a sinister shadow over the event. This has forced many young people away from the main event and passive observation of the Fireworks as their sole involvement. This is an attempt to do something positive to intervene and provide alternative activities surrounding Halloween.

Many parents and children tell us that they want a more family friendly event or other activities to encourage a family friendly atmosphere in the lead up to the event. Many concerned residents have been very aware that something must be done to reverse the decline of Brooke Park and the neighbourhood in general. That is why we are holding The Great Brooke Spook Dare.

How?

A series of workshops targeted at children and young people in the two days before Halloween. Many costumes are very expensive and the workshops will be designed to reduce costs and promote the use of waste materials. Workshops will be held in lantern making, pumpkin faces, making musical instruments and wigs and costumes and make up sessions. These workshops will draw support from schools, community groups and local youth groups. We are also encouraging parents, teachers and local youth workers to be involved in the programme of activities over the entire four days. Each child will have the opportunity to access 3/4 workshops each day over the 2 days programme leading up to the community spook parades. The programme for each workshop will be progressive and developmental to encourage the full involvement of children and young people as well as their parents, youth workers and volunteers.

Venue: Brooke Park (Rosemount) Youth Centre

Numbers: 100 children aged 6 to 18 years (assigned into 3 groups). Each workshop will last two hours. The three groups will rotate on a daily basis and will be assigned in ages (6-11 years, 11-16 years and 16-18 years). Bring your own lunch (between 12 and 12.30pm).

Workshops: Monday and Tuesday 10am to 4.30pm. This series of workshops will prepare the children for the performance during the Halloween event in the Park. The activities include costume making, mask making, face painting, lantern making, banner making, musical instruments, storytelling and carnival.

Tuesday: Variety of Carnival Activities (dance, mask making, making musical instruments, make up/face painters etc). We also need parents as volunteers to support the project. So parents come along too.

10am to 3.30pm: Open Carnival workshop. ‘Getting ready for the Festival’. Applying costumes and make up.

3.30pm to 6.00pm: The Spooks’ Parade around the Park starts at 4.00pm and is open to the public. ‘The Park is locked up and you must find a way out’. The route around the park will host surprises and scares along the route but our children will be well prepared to meet any devils, ghouls and spooks who appear in their path.

There are a limited number of places left and it is totally FREE. Just bring a pack lunch and an ability to withstand a lot of fear.
